Authenticity is a phrase that’s bandied about a lot these days, in fashion, food and travel. Often you just have to go on people’s word that what they’re offering is genuine. With the Original Original mark of excellence (below right), the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) set out to make it easier for travellers to know that they’re experiencing the real deal. In order to obtain the Original Original the business has to be majority owned, -operated and -controlled by First Nations, Métis or Inuit Peoples and demonstrate a connection and responsibility to the local Indigenous community and territory. Hop onto destinationindigenous.ca to find incredible experiences across the country, from equine-assisted learning at Osawamick Ranch on Ontario’s Manitoulin Island to glamping under the stars at Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort in Cariboo, B.C (right). Or simply look for the mark wherever you choose to wander this summer. —Antonia Whyatt
